Bholu 11 preschool was built in Ramapir No Tekro, one of the largest slums in Ahmedabad. Tekro is comprised of approximately 150,000 people belonging to the so-called Dalit or ‘untouchable’ caste. The new school is sited near a major dumping area in the slum, with two existing trees on site.
Bholu 11 is a happy, bright and thermally cool learning environment, with an ample walled garden space (a luxury in the slum). Bholu 11 has become a beautiful oasis within the barren slum, with young and old enjoying the greenery of the vegetable garden and the shade beneath the two trees. Wall and floor mosaics add an element of surprise and playfulness to the space, and express the love that was given to this small project by volunteers and community.
Completed 2012 by Volunteers Jesus Porras Montesino, Kah-Fai Lee, Caroline Kite, Ciara Tapia, Evan Drage and David Heymann.
2014 Renovations were carried out by Volunteer Scott Flett.
